In the Fushimi area of downtown Nagoya, there is a place where you can leave behind modern life, its noise and hustle. Azumasushi, two blocks from the Hilton Nagoya (literally right next to the Nagoya’s well-known theater Misonoza), has been providing the highest levels of comfort, calmness and superior sushi for almost 140 years. Founded in 1869, Azumasushi combines the finest sushi with a relaxed, traditional Japanese garden ambience. Azumasushi makes sushi that is original and unique. Historically, the Edo (Tokyo) region had different varieties of fish available to it compared with the Chubu and Kansai regions. Azumasushi has taken the basic Edo style, adapted it with elements of Kansai sushi and created a unique Nagoya flavour, using the freshest locally sourced seasonal fish. Even the sushisu (sushi vinegar) that is mixed into the sushi rice is made from a secret recipe, known only to the staff at Azumasushi. Because of this the sushi rice has a rich taste and holds its flavour for a longer period. Azumasushi also offers not only sushi but also kaiseki ryouri (traditional style multi-course Japanese meals) designed around seasonal ingredients. The wide range of vegetables and seafood used serve to compliment and exemplify the changing garden scene over the four seasons of the year. In Azumasuhi there are private rooms available for use for special occasions: seven Japanese tatami rooms seat up to 10 each, three retro table rooms seat up to 6 each, and a larger function room for up to 50 people for the big event. The staff at Azumasushi pride themselves in the precision of their work, whether it be the creation of single nigiri or a full course. With the variety of food available using the freshest ingredients and the outstanding service, all the while looking out onto a beautiful traditional Japanese garden, Azumasushi is the perfect oasis in downtown Nagoya. To get there come out of Exit 7 Fushimi subway station, and walk straight ahead (west) towards the Hilton. At the first set of lights turn left, and it is just there on your left hand side.
